1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup shortening
1 egg (beaten)
1 cup molasses
2 1/2 cup flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon salt
1 cup hot water
Preheat the oven to 350º. Cream together sugar and shortening. Add egg and
molasses, mix well. Sift in dry ingredients, add hot water. Blend well. Pour
into two buttered 9-inch cake pans. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until a toothpick
comes out clean.
