Valentine's Day Card

For Valentine's Day you might have the children in your charge craft some easy, but fanciful Valentine's Day cards. And while e-cards may be all the rage these days, it is a sure bet that grandma, mom or that special aunt would find this old fashioned greeting card a welcomed keepsake.

Materials Needed:
Piece of white typing paper

12" x 9" red construction paper
Glue stick
Scissors
Pencil
Felt tip pen
Hot iron (optional)

Directions:
Holding the typing paper horizontally, fold in half, creating a folded page 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. Neatly crease the paper down the middle. On the folded edge of the paper, about 1 1/2 inches from the top of the fold, take the pencil and begin drawing a heart, moving the pencil up in a circular shape towards the top of the paper, and then down towards the bottom of the page, bringing the pencil to the bottom edge of the fold. Cut out the heart, keeping the paper folded in half, cutting along the pencil line. Open up the heart, to ensure it is the desired heart shape. When satisfied, refold.

Now fold the half completely in half again. Repeat.

Have the child use scissors to snip little shapes along the outer edge of the folded paper, cutting along the creased edges. When they are done, open up the paper. The end result should be a lace-like heart shape. If the creases are too prominent, have an adult use a hot iron to remove any wrinkles.

Fold the red paper in half, creating a greeting card. Use the glue stick to attach the heart shape to the front of the card. Open the card and have the child write his or her greeting, using the felt tip pen.
